Sacred Heart University/ Ollscoil Sacred Heart, with its Sacred Heart Campus in Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland, established the JMI to act as a trustee of the legacy of John Moriarty, and to be a steward of his goals for the ‘hedge school’ Slí na Fírinne. SHU is deeply concerned about the rootedness of humanity in nature and the responsibility to preserve divine creation as our human home. Once the Institute was established through SHU financial support, SHU wanted to ensure it became an Irish charitable company that would continue to partner with SHU’s campus in Dingle Ireland and reach a wider Irish and international audience. SHU is the primary liaison, facilitator, and academic pathway between academic institutions, national and international, to interact or connect with the JMI. In this way the JMI can collaborate in running courses for credit through SHU’s existing accreditation. The educational dimension of the Institute is designed to become an inspiration and guide for students and the general public to reflect upon and consider the deeper dimensions of their place in the environment and their own spirituality as they study a variety of disciplines and reflect on the significant ideas of John Moriarty. In the future several documents, texts, videos, and other resources will be housed on the Dingle campus available for public use. SHU and the JMI host an annual John Moriarty lecture on the main Fairfield campus, Connecticut. The JMI is distinct from SHU as an institution, however, sustained collaboration will continue in the future.
