John Moriarty chose an eight petal Mandala as the symbol for his proposed Christian Monastic Hedge School, called Slí na Fírinne. We in the JMI have adopted his design as our emblem. Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning sacred circle centred on a bindu [Sanskrit for point, or dot], which is the place of emanation & return. It represents the spiritual journey and as such it is the ground plan for many sacred spaces, such as temples and monasteries throughout the world. By adopting this eight-petal Mandala we hope that the JMI will be a place of spiritual and ecological growth, a place of shelter and safety, guided by the writings of John Moriarty.
